Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, has spoken of her shock and horror that three people were stabbed last night in Welbeck Road in East Barnet, with one of them suffering fatal injuries.
Ms Villiers said: "It is truly shocking that these stabbings have taken place in my constituency. It is deeply worrying that these violent crimes happened in a quiet residential street in East Barnet.
I have been in touch with the Mayor of London’s office and the Metropolitan Police to urge them to ensure everything possible is done to bring to justice those responsible for this killing. I am also asking the police to provide reassurance to residents in Welbeck Road and surrounding streets with a visible police presence. They have told me that additional officers are being deployed in the area.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact police on 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote CAD8638/18June. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
I fully understand the concern felt about the recent increase in serious violent crime in London. Campaigning for more police for Barnet and to save our police station are two of my top priorities as MP. We need more police on the beat in Barnet. I have raised this matter with the Mayor of London and with the Prime Minister.
The Government is taking forward a wide-ranging strategy to combat serious violent crime. We need both a robust police response (including more stop and search) and an effective programme to help divert young people away from gangs and crime. I will be working to ensure that this strategy is delivered so that we keep our young people safe."
